Make your own Christmas body butter

Get ready for Christmas with this festive body butter recipe. With the beautiful scents of orange and clove this wonderful body butter will naturally moisturise your skin and help get you in the mood for Christmas. And, if you want to make a homemade gift for someone special, increase the quantities and give some away.

How to make your whipped body butter

To make this luxurious homemade body butter you will need the following items:

50g Shea Butter Refined
50g Cocoa Butter Refined
33ml Jojoba Oil
8 drops Orange Essential Oil
2 drops Clove Essential oil

You will also need:

A clean space to work in, some music you can measure, shake and stir to
A clean heatproof bowl that fits into a saucepan (you will also need a saucepan :) ) for making a double boiler
A clean stirring device e.g. spoon, spatula
Weighing scales and a measuring jug
An electric whisk, or a manual whisk and a strong and willing arm

If you want to make more or less of this mixture always make sure you are using a 75% butter - 25% oil ratio.

Want to make it organic?
This recipe if for a non-organic body butter. If you want to make an organic body butter and you love the smell of cocoa (It smells of cocoa rather than the essential oils), then just follow the recipe above but use Organic Shea, Organic Cocoa, Organic Jojoba with Organic Orange and Organic Clove. If you want to smell those essential oils use 75g of organic Shea and 25g of Organic Cocoa, rather than a 50/50 split, unrefined cocoa has a wonderful smell but it can overpower other aromas.

How do I make this lovely butter?

Warm up the arms, relax the shoulders, stretch out the fingers tips and begin.

Weigh 50g of the Cocoa Butter and 50g of Shea Butter. If you’ve bought the 50g pots, then just put them straight in the bowl.

Weight the butters

If you have the bigger pots, you might need to cut them into smaller pieces so they melt more evenly.

You might need to cut the butters into smaller pieces

Add 33ml of the Jojoba Oil and put your saucepan with bowl on the heat, make sure that the water in the saucepan is enough not to boil dry but does not touch the bottom of your bowl.

Add the Jojoba oil

Gently warm your butters and oil. We want to heat the mixture gently so we don't lose any of the natural nutrients in the butter or oil.

Gently warm up the butters

Once almost melted turn off the heat and give it a stir. Lift the bowl from the saucepan using a towel to protect your hands. Leave the mixture to stand so that it cools down but does not solidify.

Stir it

If you let it cool too much you might end up with this. If this happens you should gently re-melt the mixture.

Don't let it cool to much

Before you whip it, add your 8 drops of Orange and 2 drops of Clove Essential Oil. Orange Essential Oil comes out quite fast, so stay sharp. Your essential oils should not be more than 3% of the total.
Now whip it!

Add your essential oils

Re-use your Naissance pot.

Use it straight away, decorate it and give it away or just lay back and enjoy the fruits of your labour with the amazing smell of your homemade body butter.
