3 top oils and methods for improving your hair's condition

Are you someone who's hair never looks as good as you want it too. We look at some top tips to help you get the 'wow' effect back.

Castor Oil

We have seen a surge in popularity in recent years of Castor Oil. However, it has been used as a remedy for thin and thinning hair for a long time. It has also been used to help speed up hair growth. Some people found that using a castor oil overnight treatment once a week showed noticeable differences by the end of the month. Everyone is different so results may vary, but a number of people have seen the benefits of using castor oil on their hair.

It is also commonly used to promote strength, growth and thickness on eyelashes and eyebrows. Of course, you must be very careful when putting anything near your eyes. Some people use a clean mascara brush to run a small amount of oil through their eyelashes.

Coconut oil

A great hair conditioning treatment for many. Coconut oil can be used instead of your regular conditioner. It can also be used as a leave in conditioner or in a deep conditioning mask. Some people find it helpful if they have dandruff. You can also use it in combination with other oils and products to make your own masks and other hair cosmetics. Some find it irritates their skin, although this seems to be a very small amount of people.

Avocado Oil

Like the other natural oils, Avocado oil is full of vitamins and essential fatty acids. It is known to be good for conditioning hair, and may be good at penetrating the hair ensuring a deep conditioning treatment. Avocado oil contains Oleic Acid, vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium.

You can add a small amount of natural oil to your shampoo and use as normal. Start at the ends of your hair working up to the roots. Remember: don't be too liberal with the oil, less is definitely more. Massaging your scalp can be beneficial in itself.

Deep Conditioning

If you have time for a more enriching treatment, you can apply the oil all over your hair and scalp as an intensive mask, leave for a few hours and then wash out.

You could even use it as an overnight hair mask and wash it out in the morning, but make sure you wrap your hair in something that will stop the oil from getting on your bedding as it may stain fabric.

When you wash the oil out of your hair, you may find you need to do a few extra shampoos than you would normally, to ensure you get all the oil out properly.

Hot Oil Treatment

Take your oil, or combination of oils, lightly warm. Make sure it is not too hot before putting on your hair. Apply to the tips and then through the length of the hair, or to the scalp and then down the length, whatever you prefer. This is a good opportunity to massage your scalp. Comb through and if your hair is long, clip it up. Leave for at least 20 minutes or so and then wash out. Some people leave it in for a number of hours.
