So… Just What is Beauty?

A difficult question and purely subjective. What appears to be beautiful to one person, may not to another! Still the subject is still worth investigating further, especially when you consider the amount of interest, time and money spent in the ‘pursuit of beauty’.

You decide, I decide, we decide what is beautiful. Beauty is what we perceive it to be. Of course, others want to tell us what is beautiful, and more bleakly, what is not. We also seem to be driven by a need to be beautiful. Which can be a distraction from what we may really want, which is to be happy.

An entire industry is based on wanting to make you and me beautiful. And that by having this beauty we will be happier, more confident, more successful, that we will lead a better life.

We can be persuaded by others to believe something is beautiful, because our views are shaped by the world, the people and the opinions around us. We can be made to feel beautiful by these things, but we can also be made to feel ugly, unhappy and lacking confidence because of these things.

Our idea of beauty is all in our head. Our ideas of our own beauty are also in our head. Ultimately everyone has the power to define beauty for themselves. So if someone makes us feel ugly then they have effectively got hold of our thoughts.

It’s really hard to stop other people deciding for us. It’s really hard to define our own version of beauty. The constant drive to remove ‘imperfections’, to smooth things out or puff them up is everywhere. Though we know that beauty really lies in imperfection. And as Roald Dahl once wrote:

“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

We are alive, we are lucky if we have our health, we are fortunate to have the chance to observe life and to be alive. And as we only have a finite amount of time, it would be a waste to make people feel bad about themselves, when we could support each other.

The definition of beauty is “a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” Beauty can be anything we decide. Beautiful things are wonderful, amazing, astounding, breath taking. But what makes something beautiful should only be decided by you, and we should never be made to feel anything but astounding.

We are not what other people think of us, we are what we think of ourselves. And if we can see the beauty in ourselves, then we will more easily be able to see the beauty in others.

What do you think…. Are we too ready to judge people by their looks?

Coming up Tomorrow… Do you want a natural and organic beauty routine, but don’t know where to start? It’s a reasonable question and you would expect the answer too be easy. However, like so many people, you probably want an organic beauty regime but finding everything you need isn’t always as straightforward as it should be, until now…
